More ferry operators announce fare adjustments as fuel crisis impacts Philippine shipping
Fuel Surcharges and Service Suspensions Across Philippine Shipping Lines
Due to the sustained increase in global crude oil prices—now exceeding $90 per barrel—several major maritime operators in the Philippines have announced immediate fare adjustments and service modifications. These changes are a direct response to a nearly 40% increase in marine fuel costs stemming from ongoing geopolitical volatility in the Middle East.
Service & Rate Adjustments
The following carriers have confirmed price hikes and surcharges:
- FastCat: Implemented revised rates for passengers and vehicles effective March 6, 2026.
- Jomalia Shipping Corp: A 20% fuel surcharge on all passenger and freight tickets will take effect on March 9, 2026.
- Roble Shipping: A temporary “fuel fee” will be integrated into ticket pricing starting March 9, 2026. This is a floating surcharge subject to removal should market prices stabilize.
Route Suspensions (Visayas Region)
Citing prohibitive operating costs, SeaCat has officially suspended the following routes until further notice:
- Cebu – Catbalogan
- Cebu – Baybay
Outlook
Market analysts suggest that if crude prices remain at current levels, other major operators, including Montenegro Shipping Lines and Starhorse Shipping, may be forced to implement similar surcharges within the next 7–10 days.
Passengers are strongly advised to confirm current ticket pricing and vessel availability through official carrier channels prior to arriving at the pier.
