Lite Shipping Corporation has clarified that electric vehicles (EVs) are not banned aboard its vessels, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the country’s transition toward sustainable transportation while prioritizing maritime safety.

In an official advisory released by Lite Shipping Corporation – Lite Ferries, the company announced that the carriage of EVs complies with Republic Act No. 11697, also known as the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), which was enacted in April 2022.

Strict safety protocols for EV transport

To safeguard passengers, crew members, cargo, and the vessels themselves, Lite Shipping has outlined mandatory precautionary measures aligned with international maritime safety standards for lithium-ion battery systems.

  • EVs shall be stowed in a well-ventilated area of the vessel.
  • Dedicated fire extinguishing equipment suitable for electrical and lithium-ion battery fires shall be readily available on board.
  • EVs must remain switched off throughout the duration of the voyage.
  • Drivers and passengers shall not be permitted to remain inside EVs during transit.
  • Additional safety protocols may be implemented as deemed necessary by the vessel operator.

Global maritime alignment

Lite Shipping emphasized that these preventive measures mirror international practices. The company clarified that there is no general ban on transporting electric vehicles internationally, as global operators continue to move EVs while enforcing strict risk-mitigation protocols.

By implementing these guidelines, Lite Shipping Corporation aims to back the Philippine government’s push to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and promote cleaner mobility, ensuring that eco-friendly travel remains secure across its routes.
