Puerto Galera officials urge ferry operators to lower Batangas route fares

The Puerto Galera Municipal Council has formally issued a resolution urging shipping companies to reduce passenger fares on the Batangas-Puerto Galera route. The move aims to alleviate the financial burden on residents and maintain the town’s competitiveness as a premier tourism destination.

The Distance-Price Disparity

A primary point of contention in the council’s resolution is the current pricing imbalance. Officials noted that the 15-nautical-mile crossing to Puerto Galera is currently more expensive than the 24-nautical-mile route to Calapan. This discrepancy has raised concerns that high transit costs may deter potential visitors during the critical Holy Week and summer peak seasons.

Current Market Rates

Fares currently vary significantly based on vessel type and service class:

  • Montenegro Shipping Lines: Positioned as the budget-friendly option, with RORO passenger tickets at ₱425 and fast craft services at ₱612.
  • Galerian Water Transport: Standard passage is priced at ₱600, with business class reaching ₱800.
  • Island Water: Fast craft tourist class is set at ₱620, while VIP/Business class options range from ₱850 to ₱1,000.

Economic Impact

Local leaders emphasized that because Puerto Galera is an island municipality, these sea routes serve as a vital lifeline for students, workers, and the local supply chain. With the economy heavily reliant on tourism, the council fears that uncompetitive pricing could undermine recent infrastructure upgrades and marketing efforts.

The municipal government is scheduled to enter formal negotiations with ferry operators in the coming weeks to discuss potential rate adjustments.
