The Cebu Port Authority (CPA) has issued an official statement addressing the recent flooding and seawater overflow at Hagnaya Port in San Remigio, which has caused significant difficulty for travelers during high tide.
In a statement released on March 28, 2026, the CPA clarified that the current conditions are a result of the 2025 earthquake, which impacted several port facilities across Northern Cebu. While recent structural assessments indicate the port remains safe for general use, the authority is taking proactive measures to address soil instability and geohazard risks.
Php 8.1 million allocated for geohazard studies
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) 7 has recommended the conduct of Engineering Geological and Geohazard Assessment (EGGA) studies to determine if the affected areas are suitable for long-term rehabilitation. The CPA has allocated Php 8.1 million for these assessments, covering three major ports:
- Hagnaya Port in San Remigio
- Kawit Port in Medellin
- Polambato Port in Bogo
The procurement process for these studies has been completed, and the contract is currently being finalized for immediate implementation. The CPA emphasized that proceeding with repairs without these proper assessments could compromise public safety and lead to the inefficient use of government funds.
Operational adjustments for passenger safety
To ensure the safety of the riding public while awaiting permanent solutions, the Cebu Port Authority, in coordination with various shipping lines, has agreed to suspend operations during high tide. This measure aims to prevent passengers from having to navigate seawater overflows within the facility.
Travelers are advised to check with their respective shipping lines for updated schedules that may be affected by the tide cycles. The CPA management has expressed its appreciation for the public’s understanding as they work toward a permanent rehabilitation plan for the Northern Cebu transport hubs.
