Direct Naval–Matnog sea route to open this March, linking Biliran and Sorsogon
Travel between Eastern Visayas and Southern Luzon is expected to become more convenient with the upcoming operation of a new direct sea route between Naval, Biliran and Matnog, Sorsogon, which is set to open this March.
The new route was finally established after negotiations between the Local Government Unit of Naval and San Ricardo Shipping Lines Corporation (SRSLC). To operate the new route, the company will use the M/V Owen Gian 1, which was recently launched and blessed prior to its operation. This is considered a major breakthrough in facilitating inter-island travel in the region.
For several years, travelers from Biliran to Sorsogon, for example, had to take longer routes that involved multiple land and sea transfers. Many of these travelers had to take different routes, which increased their travel time and costs. But with the opening of this new direct route, travel will become much easier.
The following are some of the advantages from the opening of the new route between Naval and Matnog:
- Faster travel time. With the new route, there will be no need to go through several transfers, which can be tiring.
- Lower travel expenses. With the new route, travel expenses may be lower.
- Convenient movement of goods. Companies that transport goods from Visayas to Luzon or vice versa may find the new route convenient.
According to local officials, the new route will not only benefit travelers but will also contribute to the economic development of the two provinces. Biliran and Sorsogon have thriving fishing, agricultural, and small business industries. With the new route, it will be easier to transport goods from one island to another.
The opening of this route is also believed to enhance the link between Eastern Visayas and the Bicol Region. The Matnog Port in Sorsogon is one of the major entry points to Luzon, while the Naval Port in Biliran is another major hub. A direct link between these two locations may enhance regional mobility and accessibility.
Although the final sailing times and corresponding fares will be announced separately, passengers are advised to follow official announcements from San Ricardo Shipping Lines and concerned authorities.
With March approaching, the opening of the Naval-Matnog inter-island route brings a promising start to inter-island travel, providing a faster and more convenient route between Biliran and Sorsogon. As the launch date approaches, passengers and entrepreneurs alike are advised to follow official announcements regarding the final schedules, fares, and booking procedures.
