The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has officially announced a moratorium on public transport fare hikes, following a directive from the President. The decision comes as a strategic response to the ongoing surge in fuel prices, which has been exacerbated by the escalating conflict in the Middle East.
Expanding support for commuters and drivers
In line with the government’s commitment to protect the public from economic pressures, the DOTr is currently finalizing several support programs aimed at both passengers and public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers. Among the key initiatives being prepared is the implementation of free ride services to help alleviate the burden on daily commuters.
Furthermore, DOTr Secretary Banoy Lopez has initiated dialogues with toll operators to secure potential toll discounts, providing additional financial relief to transport stakeholders.
Fast-tracking fuel subsidies
To support the transport sector directly, the agency is accelerating the distribution of fuel subsidies. These payments are designated for qualified drivers and operators who continue to struggle with the high cost of petroleum products. The DOTr emphasized that this is part of a broader, ongoing effort to ensure that all possible forms of assistance reach those in the transportation industry, including commuters, drivers, and operators alike.
